October is internationally recognised as the Breast Cancer Awareness Month:

But seriously ladies, underneath the witty sarcasm of this statement lies a sombre fact that breast cancer is the most common cancer among Malaysian women from all ethnicities and  also the most common cause of cancer death among women in Malaysia. The disease accounts for 31.3% of newly diagnosed cancer cases in Malaysian women between 2003-2005, as confirmed by the Third (and latest) Report of the Malaysian National Cancer Registry (Lim, Rampal & Halimah, 2008). Breast cancer risk is determined by many factors including age, genetic predisposition, diet and lifestyle choices. Since risk factors are based on probabilities, even someone without any of the known risk factors can still get breast cancer.

The Malaysian Medical Association asserts that women who were less likely to undergo breast examinations are at a higher risk of late detection of breast cancer.  Having personally seen the effect of this disease on loved ones,  we here at T3 feel very strongly about doing our bit in putting the word out on the importance of early detection. It's not enough just being aware about the "Big C", we also encourage our readers to be proactive - perform self-examinations regularly (check out the following insert on how) or schedule annual clinical breast exams. Routine mammograms are encouraged for women in their 40s. The best protection is indeed, early detection.

p/s: We can also contribute to the cause by making donations to cancer organisations such as MAKNA and PRIDE Foundation. In honour and support of the many heroines fighting this disease, brands such as Estee Lauder, Origins, Kao, Ralph Lauren, and Wacoal, among others, are offering (for a limited time only) special edition pink merchandise for sale. Part of the proceeds from the sale of these products will benefit various cancer charities and organisations. So think (and shop) pink - we can make a difference!
